When we get inquiries about less common cars it usually ends up with the potential customer deciding against going forward with the project. This can be due to financial reasons, time constraints, or simply flaking out. In the case of our customer with the Saab 9-3 we got the green light. He had done his homework very well and found a company that was offering a 3″ down pipe with CAT and Flex section. However he did not care to spend $700+ to purchase it. He provided me with a picture of the product and I was able to give him a price of around half of the $700+. With the extra money he was going to save he also decided to get a custom 3″ exhaust. We chose to go with an aluminized steel to keep the cost down for the entire project. Adding stainless would have added roughly $200 more to the final cost.

Our customer had been previously running a stock exhaust system with a Magnaflow polished muffler. We chose Magnaflow again, knowing what to expect in terms of quality, cost, and sound. Magnaflow also offers very nice 49 state legal catalytic converters. We chose a 4″ diameter, 9″ long, spun metallic CAT. It was perfect for our fitment, function, and budget. The muffler was a polished 14″ body, 5″x 9″ oval, with 3″ inlet 4″ outlet on center design. Different from the stock designed exhaust system we chose to incorporate the flex section into the down pipe. This was all about making the build easier and quicker for me. The rest of the materials were pretty straight forward. I used a total of (7) 90 degree bends and 6′ of straight tubing.

All in all I was really excited to get to work on this car. It was a welcome change and provided me with some new challenges. The finished product is excellent and has left me wanting to work on more of these cars in the future. Not just down pipes and exhausts, but turbo swaps, intercooler upgrades, and reprogramming/tuning. Thank you to our customer for giving us the opportunity to work on his car and opening up opportunities to work on more in the future.
